Having a great product search is a huge opportunity to provide an amazing shopping experience. It is one of the primary ways you can help customers find what they’re looking for.

An efficient search helps increase conversions because customers can find what they want right away. eCommerce companies that don’t have an effective search are losing out on sales as customers get frustrated and give up trying to find what they’re looking for.

In case you haven’t heard, mobile eCommerce is booming. Many people use their phones to look up products that they may not be able to find in an actual retail space. They are already in the buying mood and you need to accommodate this.

Simply having a search on your eCommerce store is already putting you ahead of the game. Some stores still do not have a search!

The following sites have all or most of what your search should have, such as the right placement, auto-complete, size and more.

ShopStyle’s product search is at the front and centre of their homepage. It invites you to search for clothing, bags, shoes etc. As you start typing in your search terms, auto-complete kicks in and helps you find what you’re looking for. For example, if you were to type in “dress” a list suggesting things like Anne Klein dress and dress trousers appears. Once submitted you are taken to a results page where there is a huge and helpful filter list down the left hand side.

Displayed right by the logo, JadoPado’s product search is quite large, making it instantly recognizable. It invites you to search by asking the question, “What are you looking for?”

Search results show up as you type, much like in Google. You are then able to narrow your results with a filtering system down the left-hand side. A top filter allows you to choose how you would like to view your products while browsing.

The more products you sell, the better your product search needs to be. Imagine what a nightmare it would be to shop on Amazon if they ignored their search features.

The long search box allows for longer searches. An example of this would be searching for a product by the make, model and serial number. Amazon has auto-complete which saves time. The search also has a specific categories filter in case you want to look for your item within a certain department. Once taken to the results page, there is a great side filtering system to further narrow your results.

Shopbop is a site where you are able to find designer products such as clothing and accessories. The search is not the main focus of the page but can be found quite easily in the top right hand corner.

Again, they have an auto-complete for fast search. Once you get to the results page you are able to further narrow your results and choose how many products you would like to display at a time.

Ten Acre

Located right in the navigation, the search is incredibly easy to find. Once you’ve put in your search term, you just have to hit enter. You are then brought to your search results. The page displays the amount of search results and allows you to display your results from either low to high or high to low.

ASOS.com is one of the UK’s largest online-only fashion and beauty stores and also has an amazing search. Displayed right in the top middle of the page, the search is in a prime location. Once you click in the search box, a drop down appears displaying recent searches. You are given the option to clear the recent searches. ASOS uses auto-complete for a fast search. You just have to hit enter and you are taken to your results. You are given many different filtering options to narrow your search results.

Active Health Supply

You can’t miss the product search bar on Active Health Supply. It’s large and extremely recognizable. There is no need to actually click on the search button as you can just hit enter on the keyboard. You are then able to filter the results further and set up the display how you like.

Etsy is a marketplace for handmade and vintage goods. Their product search is located in an ideal spot, the top middle of the page. The search bar has auto-complete and you are able to hit enter and go. Once the results are displayed you are able to filter your results further. You can also remove individual filters without having to expire the search.

Putting it all together

Providing your customers with a great user experience is crucial to gaining customers and keeping existing ones. If you want to increase your eCommerce conversion rate (who doesn’t?) make sure you pay attention to where you place your search and how it contributes to helping your customers find what they’re looking for quickly and accurately.

It’s all about making the shopping experience easy and fun.
