Clothing brand Seventh.Ink has been selling with LemonStand from the very early days of our platform. What started as a fun side project for designer and artist Matthew Johnson is now known worldwide. Despite the growth, just one person is behind all of the design, illustration, marketing, branding, and everything else that is Seventh.Ink.
They now offer a growing collection of unique, artistically designed shirts, hoodies, pins, patches, printed posters and more. All clothing is printed in the US with water based inks on American Apparel and Next Level and have custom printed tags.
We talked to founder and designer/artist Matthew Johnson to learn more about building his one man brand.
Introduce Seventh.Ink and tell us your story
“I’m a freelance graphic designer/commercial artist who started Seventh.Ink as a clothing brand just over ten years ago. The brand began as a creative outlet for me when I fell in love with the idea of putting original artwork on t-shirts.
I originally started the brand with a more graphics heavy direction, but after a few years I realized that I wanted to make the designs more illustrative. Year after year I’ve gone further and further down that road with heavily illustrative shirts that depict iconic designs.
I eventually began creating other products such as screen printed posters, enamel pins, embroidered patches, and much more. “
How are you growing your online sales? What marketing and growth strategies and/or tactics are working for you?
“Online marketing seems to change each year, so it’s been a tricky thing to find ways to market that work and stick. Because my work is so illustrative, I personally find a large connection through Instagram as my main social media platform.
I’ve also been setting up booths at comic conventions and local markets over the last few years that have been instrumental in organically spreading the word about my brand. I didn’t realize it at first, but those shows have been responsible for a lot of my online connections with customers afterwards and I’ve seen good online growth as a result.”
How do you handle things like customer service, shipping, fulfillment, etc. Are there any tools you’re using that help?
“I’ve always done everything in house so that I can manage the level of quality I want to give to my customers. The main thing that has helped me become efficient as far as shipping goes is my good ‘ol Zebra label printer and an Endicia account. Once I implemented that combination my shipping speed went up dramatically.”
What is your overall impression of LemonStand?
“I’ve been a LemonStand user since the Beta days and I love it. Before LemonStand I had tried a number of shopping cart solutions that just didn’t cut it for me.
As a slight perfectionist I wanted to have control over every aspect of my website and I was never happy with any other cart system. Once LemonStand came along, it was a no brainer that this was the direction for me.”
What are some of your favorite features of LemonStand and why?
“I love the ability to completely customize everything about my website down to the tiniest detail. Because the structure of LemonStand is so clean, I can quickly adjust anything I want on my website in an intuitive manner. It helps that I’m a web developer, which allows me to update and adjust my site independently as I see fit.”
Would you recommend LemonStand to others who need an eCommerce site? Why?
“Absolutely. LemonStand has been a huge part of my online presence thanks to its flexibility and scaleability, and I’ve been an advocate for it since the start. I even have links to LemonStand in the Partners section of my website to help spread the word about this amazing eCommerce platform.”
